Natural Solutions for Water Purity
Managing flooding naturally on the Rivers Ure and Burn, reducing erosion and improving water quality and habitat.
Working with Fera Science we are developing a water quality monitoring project for the River Burn, to establish the principal sources of water pollution and to then develop a scheme to help minimise this. On a wider catchment basis, for the watercourses on the Estate that feed into the River Ure, we are working with the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust to establish best locations for natural flood management measures such as leaky dams, tree planting, herbal lays and water meadows. These will all help reduce flood peaks and sewage spills, improve diversity and reduce erosion to improve downstream agricultural yield and urban flooding.
