Peatland Carbon

The carbon sequestered on the Ilton and Colsterdale moors is assessed using the Peatland Code methodology. This measures the extent to how much carbon emissions are avoided. It takes the condition of the peat pre-project as a baseline and sets it against emissions now that the peat has been restored.

Drone surveys are currently being undertaken to assess, from the start of the project, how effective the measures taken have been. A digital reporting model will be built to report on this.

Restored peatland on Ilton and Colsterdale moors assessed using the Peatland Code to measure carbon sequestration and emissions reduction

Looking ahead, the further works that were recommended in the Yorkshire Peat Partnership report – Sphagnum moss planting and additional erosion blocking – will be assessed by what is being sequestered rather than what is not lost. We will use innovative sensor systems ground truthed against the UK Centre of Ecology and Hydrology’s peatland carbon monitoring system, using probes to measure the water table and monitor CO2 emission and sequestration levels.
