Why & How

Establishing what is there, and measuring how we enhance it.

“Human activity is changing the climate of our planet and destroying its biodiversity at an unprecedented rate” – Royal Society 2024

Why

It is still possible to limit the extent to which our planet will warm, and to reduce our impact on the natural world to help restore our biodiversity. On Swinton Estate we have an abundance of natural capital that can provide natural solutions. These can generate clean energy, reduce emissions, sequester carbon and improve biodiversity by creating habitats.

By sharing our connection to, and knowledge of, nature we also help build community, engagement and improved wellbeing for us all.

This is why: simply because we should and we can.

How

Using baseline surveys and ongoing assessments combining on the ground observation with cutting edge technology, we can provide detailed analysis of how the positive environmental impact is being achieved.

  • Woodland Carbon: Our baseline assessment for sequestration of carbon in trees is the Woodland Carbon Code. This is the quality assured standard for woodland carbon projects in the UK.
  • Peatland Carbon: We monitor peatland carbon by using the Peatland Code methodology, measuring the extent to how much carbon emissions are avoided.
  • Biodivsity Net Gain measurement: The baseline for our BNG sites is established using a combination of drone assessment, site walkover and water accumulation assessment.
